A promising school year starts in Mindanao

PRIMED FOR THE NEW SCHOOLYEAR Students of Batomelong Elementary School in Batomelong, General Santos City, share a light moment during their reading class. USAID?s Growth with Equity in Mindanao, through its Education Matching Grant Project, matched the funds raised by the school?s parent-teacher association to improve the school?s multi-media center and book collection. PTAs have collaborated with the GEM Program to implement specific education improvement activities in almost 900 partner schools, under the oversight of the Mindanao Development Authority. These improvements include the establishment of mini libraries, computer and science laboratories, and multi-media centers, among others. To date, GEM has awarded more than 1,000 education matching grants to schools throughout conflict-affected areas in Mindanao, benefiting more than 560,000 students. GEM
